Ever been in a situation where you go to a class and sit down and just wait for the teacher to show up, but you don’t talk? Everyone is either talking to their neighbors or sitting quietly? Well, yea, I have been in that situation before, and it indeed is awkward. So here are some tips that can help you make your new friend in college.
1. Finding a Place
First off, you have to find a place to make a new friend, right? But where would you find a place to meet that new friend? Inside the library? No. That’s too quiet, and people probably don’t want to be bothered in the library. Here is a list of places to meet your new friend on campus:
- Clubs will “have all the benefits of campus events with the added bonus that they meet regularly. This gives you a chance to have repeated interactions with the same people, which is an important ingredient in forming friendships”, as Ransom Patterson states in his article.
- Classes are another great place to meet your new friend. If you don’t know how to start a conversation, simply ask about the homework, or tell them you like their tshirt, or just ask what they think about the class.
- The dining area is a great place to socialize. You can always ask to sit at the same table with them by simply asking “May I sit here with you?” And if they say no, move on. If they say yes, then that’s great! Don’t be afraid of rejection.
- Around Campus is pretty easy as well. When I was in college, I see so many people just sitting on a bench or laying in the grass alone, so what’s better than to walk up to them and ask how they’re doing.

2. Be Yourself
Now that you have found a place to meet your new friend, all you have to do is be yourself. As Jeremy Goldman states in his article:
“No matter which college you go to, there will be people who share your interests and personality. It is important that you let your personality shine through so that your friends will be drawn to who you are as a person.”

3. Be Realistic
Don’t have high expectations when you make a new friend, you have to understand everyone is different and not your “perfect friend”. And don’t expect to have a new best friend within the first day of hanging out. As Erin Nicole Celletti states it:
“Having reasonable expectations about the adjustments and formation of new relationships is key to your success, and your sanity.”

4. Similar Interests
When approaching your new friend, find some similar interests, such as same shows you both like, food, or hobbies. As the author from Keepinspiring.me states:
“You need to continue to interact with the people you click with. This should come naturally if you share a lot in common, but in some cases you still need to make an effort.”
